Our PUNgeon Master/Senior Art Director helps shed a little light on our British soap opera–loving Director of Creative Technology.

What led you to become a developer? Was there another profession that you wanted to pursue, or even potentially explore in the future?

I was fortunate to be around computers most of my life thanks to my Dad. The idea of making something from nothing drove me to work on personal web projects. Once I learned I could express programming in a visual way, I was hooked.

As a citizen of Great Britain and Canada, how have each informed your personality?

Bouncing back and forth over the Atlantic and the Great North certainly shaped my personality. I would say I get my dry humor and music taste from the UK. Politeness and a love for Neil Young from Canada.

I know you have artistic interests such as playing guitar and photographing images on television. Is there any other creative venture that you have explored or want to explore?

I am all about making anything digital or physical. If I could, I would love to make a rock album. Unfortunately, my guitar skills are less than ideal. I have more guitars than talent.

What is your opinion on siloed and specialized roles within web design? Do you feel there needs to be a range of dedicated roles in the process (e.g., UI Designer, UX Designer, Content Strategist, Architect, etc.) or should people just be able to offer solutions to any and all aspects of the design process, working together earlier as a team?

All depends on the size of the team. Larger teams, which usually involve much larger clients, do require some siloing of capabilities. Smaller groups can get away with a much more integrated approach. Bottom line: if you can keep from doing so, do not silo.

Why do you like that Avocado Toast so much at Peckish Pig in Evanston?

I talk about this toast a few times a week! Avocado is a super food. I feel super when eating it. At home I make my own version. Not as good as Peckish Pig, of course.

As someone in a senior/managerial role, what do you enjoy more: overseeing the progress of others or getting your hands dirty and solving problems directly?

Honestly, I like all of it. I love problem-solving. That includes the process also. I work with such great people, and they make it easy.

How do you feel about the rising popularity of web development/design in the workforce? Are there any foreseeable bubbles to be burst? What do you see as the most effective ways of rising above?

The bubble just got started! The thing about web development is that it moves at the speed of light. To be successful, you need to adjust your aim constantly. But that’s what makes it interesting.

What was your last meal?

I went to First Draft (around the corner) and had a veggie burger.

What’s a challenge that you have had to learn to overcome while collaborating with designers? Was it rewarding?

Not so much a challenge but something to be aware of. As a developer we are so focused on the nerdy tech side of things we sometimes forget about the purpose of the design. What does the design communicate? Who is the audience? Can my Auntie from the UK use this?
